Super Mario Sluggers Revealed

Story Courtesy of 1up.com

Nintendo of America demonstrated Mario Super Sluggers for the Wii at its San Francisco media summit today. The title, which is expected to launch in Japan this June and at an undisclosed date in North America, uses the Wii Remote’s motion controls to mimic the in-game actions of the sport, much like in Wii Sports.

During the demonstration, producer Bill Trinen showed off the various gameplay mechanics, such as pitching, which has players pulling back on the Wii Remote to perform the wind-up, waiting for a pair of on-screen rings to match up, and then launching forward to release the pitch. Twisting the remote during the release will apparently put a spin on the ball, and pressing the A and B buttons together allowed Mario to put fire on a special pitch in the demo. When fielding as an outfielder, you can snap the Wii Remote towards the direction of the intended base to throw the ball and make diving catches by pressing the A button at the correct moment.

As in Wii Sports, batting is accomplished with a simple swing of the Wii Remote, though you can charge up a swing by pulling back on the controller prior to the swing. Special swings are also available, as the demo showed Mario igniting a ball with his swing. Though Donkey Kong made the catch, he apparently caught on fire as a result.

We’re still fielding notes from our crew at the event, so we’ll be updating as further details come out for Mario Super Sluggers and anything else revealed at the summit.
